Basketball roundup: Gore, Roland open with wins

ROLAND - Senior post Samantha Barnes led the way offensively as the Roland Lady Rangers routed Mena, Ark., 74-50 on Tuesday night at Carl Matlock Fieldhouse.

The Lady Rangers claimed their season-opener in dominant fashion as Barnes poured in 26 points. Caitlin Goode added 12 points, Katy Beakley 11 and Jaslin Kellogg 10 for Roland.

Roland erupted for 25 points in the second quarter to open up a 37-25 halftime lead. The Lady Rangers were up by 14 entering the fourth period and put the game away with a 24-14 surge over the final eight minutes.

Roland will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Broken Bow Festival with games against Broken Bow on Friday and Valliant on Saturday.

Roland 62, Mena 32 (B)

ROLAND - The Rangers got 26 points from Trey Chambers while picking up a non-conference victory over Mena, Ark., on Tuesday night.

Caleb Daniel joined Chambers in double figures with 11 points for Roland, which cruised to a 28-10 lead by halftime and never looked back while moving to 1-0 on the season.

Gore 69, Okay 41 (B)

GORE - The Pirates opened their season with an 18-point win over Okay in a Big Eight Conference contest at Brooks Cawhorn Gym.

Senior Devan Rineheart poured in 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Gore, which also got a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds from Logan Andrews.

Okay slipped to 0-1 despite 14 points from Derrion Johnson.

Gore 42, Okay 30 (G)

GORE - It was a victorious start for the Gore girls as they tipped off the season with a win over Okay.

Senior forward Dena Qualls led the way for the Lady Pirates with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Sophomore Kenna Tackett chipped in another 11 points to help Gore claim the Big Eight Conference win.

Okay (0-1) was paced by Courtney Smith with 10 points.
