Seniors Damon Lynch and Matt Oberste led a fourth-quarter charge for Sallisaw as the Black Diamonds escaped with a 42-36 win over Muldrow on Tuesday night at Paul Post Fieldhouse.

On a night when the Diamonds were ice cold for the opening three quarters, they got hot down the stretch.

Sallisaw was shooting just 25.9 percent from the floor entering the fourth quarter, but nailed its next seven attempts while shooting 10 of 12 over the final eight minutes.

Oberste netted a game-high 16 points, two of which came on a crucial tip-in with less than 40 seconds to play. That basket gave the Diamonds a 40-36 edge and he later broke the Muldrow pass and dished to Trey Wiley for another score to seal the victory.

“Who in our program has made more big plays than he has? It’s just another example of a big game player making a big play,” Sallisaw head coach Jeff Chronister said of Oberste’s effort.

The Diamonds also got some critical baskets from Lynch, who knocked down three consecutive bombs from 3-point range to open the fourth quarter. Lynch finished with 11 points.

“We were really struggling and Damon bailed us out,” said Chronister. “I’m really happy for him because he works so hard every day and tries so hard and has such a great attitude. When Damon was younger, he was a shooter and a scorer and I’m really pleased to see him return to that form.”

Muldrow was led in scoring and rebounding by freshman Nate Hamilton with 12 points and seven boards. He drove to the hole for three baskets in a 6-0 run to hand the Bulldogs a 14-13 halftime lead.

Hamilton added a shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter as Muldrow took a 21-18 edge into the fourth.

The Bulldogs couldn’t hang on, though, and saw a two-game win streak snapped while falling to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the NOAA conference.

Tim Chandler finished with seven for Muldrow, Donathan Caudill six, Jake Peterson four, Josh McDonald four and Dillon Ross three.

Wiley had five points for Sallisaw, while Garrett Langley added four, Robert Raborn two, Tyler Clifton two and Jason Fullbright two. Clifton also matched Oberste with a team-high six rebounds.

“Tyler Clifton played very well and had some big rebounds, including a clutch one down the stretch. And Garrett Langley had a good fourth quarter for us as well,” said Chronister.

Sallisaw is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NOAA.

“I’m really proud that we fought through not playing very well tonight. We just battled through it. When you don’t play well and you find a way to win anyway, it’s important stuff if you want to have a good season. Especially at home and especially against a conference opponent,” said Chronister. “Hats off to Muldrow. I thought they played well.”

Fontana Tate shot lights-out and Jordan Chambers gave Muldrow a lift inside the paint as the Class 4A seventh-ranked Lady Bulldogs stayed undefeated on Tuesday night at Sallisaw.

Muldrow improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the NOAA as Tate poured in 25 points, including three treys.

“Fontana is a great player and a great shooter. She understands the game so well,” said Muldrow head coach Jana Armer, who was also pleased with the emergence of Chambers.

A 6-1 senior post, Chambers netted 13 points after the break and finished with 14.

“Jordan is by far the most improved player we have on the team. She has great moves and now has great confidence too,” said Armer. “We want to get her the ball inside. She made a statement tonight that she’s going to have to be reckoned with.”

Sallisaw (0-3, 0-1) hung tough with Muldrow and was within 25-22 when Morgan Kostka buried a 3-pointer to open the third quarter.

Muldrow began to pll away later in the quarter as Brandie Holt knocked down a pair of 3s and Chambers had four points in a 10-0 run that made it 40-26 entering the fourth quarter.

“We started hitting some shots we weren’t making in the first half and Jordan Chambers went to work. There was a stretch where she was dominant out there. Fontana did what she does, Brandie Holt knocked down some big shots and we picked it up on defense too,” said Armer.

Holt finished with 10 points along with a team-high six rebounds for Muldrow. Natalee Frederick chipped in three points, Destiny Wilhite two, Emily Martin two and Katelyn Williams two.

“I’m happy to be 4-0. It’s been very tough because they were all road games,” said Armer. “That’s tough when you’re playing as many young kids as we have, but they have responded well. Each game they’ve gotten better and better and that’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

Muldrow played without starter Debra Silva, who fell hard and injured her tailbone the night before in a win at Stigler

“She got it X-rayed today and nothing is broken, but she’s sore. We felt like the best thing for our future was to hold her out tonight,” said Armer. “It was my decision completely. She would have got out there if I’d let her.”

Caitie Goff paced Sallisaw with 13 points and five rebounds. Kostka, who hit two treys, finished with 10 points. Talia Lattimore added five points, Shania Valdivia three, Ellen Boggs two, Courtney Eldridge two, Samantha Rhodes two and Lacey Smith two.
