The life of a woman who lived 19 years on death row for a 1982 murder in Gans was re-told Oct. 8 when a film crew visited Sequoyah County to do a documentary.

Stacy Dillon, the man behind the camera, videoed Marlene McCurtis, field producer at Burrud Productions, as she interviewed former Sequoyah County Sheriff Sam Lockhart. McCurtis asked questions about the brutal murder that took place while he was sheriff.

The documentary will look into the life of “Mean Nadean” Lois Nadean Smith of Tahlequah—who was convicted of the July 4, 1982, murder of 20-year-old Cindy Baillee in Gans.

Smith and her son James Gregory “Greg” Smith, who was 18 at the time, picked up Baillee, Greg Smith’s ex-girlfriend, from a Tahlequah motel early on the morning of the murder. When the three left the motel Nadean Smith choked Baillie and stabbed her in the throat as they drove to the home of Smith’s ex-husband in Gans.

Testimony from a state witness, Teresa Baker Demoss, claimed Nadean Smith forced Baillee to sit in a recliner and tormented her with a pistol. Demoss said Nadean Smith fired several shots at Baillie.

Demoss testified that she heard “two or three more shots fired”. Demoss told the jury she, “looked and saw Cindy’s head fall over and she fell out of the recliner.”

Demoss testified Nadean Smith stood on Baillie’s neck and bounced up and down.

Baillie was shot four times in the chest and two times in the back of her head. An autopsy revealed nine gunshot wounds to Baillie’s body. Nadean Smith was executed Dec. 4, 2001, by lethal injection.

The documentary, “Women on Death Row V,” is the fifth produced by Burrud Productions. Burrud Productions Inc. is a company that has been

“Women on Death Row V” is a 90-minute special that tells the dramatic stories of women, each of whom committed murder, confessed their crime and were given death sentences.

The documentary will air on WE tv. According to the WE tv Web site WE tv is a womens entertainment television station available in nearly 72 million U.S. households. An E-mail from WE tv viewer services stated, “We don’t yet know when episodes will air.” The e-mail did say to check back in January and more information would be available.
