Sallisaw won an early season showdown in District 4A-4 on Friday night with a 27-14 triumph over Broken Bow at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.
The Black Diamonds stayed undefeated at 4-0 overall, but they had to rally from an early deficit after Eric Dockins’ 12-yard run handed the visitors a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
The second quarter was all Sallisaw, though, as the Diamonds reeled off 27 points to take a 27-7 halftime edge against the defending league champions.
Matt Oberste tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Trey Wiley and added TD runs of 11 and 3 yards. Phillip Lefler kicked a 37-yard field goal and later booted a 27-yarder on the final play of the half.
Broken Bow pulled a score back midway through the fourth quarter when Payton Werner completed a 24-yard TD pass to Jay Werner.
The Savages dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the district with the loss.
Sallisaw will return to action on Friday night at Muldrow.
Sequoyah 49, Vian 28TAHLEQUAH - Ryker Salazar ran for five touchdowns on Friday night to lead Class 2A No. 5 Sequoyah past No. 6-ranked Vian at Thompson Field.
The Wolverines struck first on a 73-yard touchdown run by Dylan Taylor, but Sequoyah came back to grab a 29-14 halftime lead.
Salazar scored on runs of 3, 5, 53, 5 and 12 yards as the Indians built a 43-14 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Taylor rushed for three Vian touchdowns and Rowdy Simon scored on a 61-yard run in the fourth period, but Vian fell to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in District 2A-8. The Wolverines will host Colcord on Friday night.
Sequoyah is now 4-0 and 1-0.
Central 36, Haileyville 14The Tigers moved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in District A-6 by thumping Haileyville on Friday night at Central.
Ryan Rogers led the way offensively with touchdown runs of 2, 1, 5 and 56 yards. Brandon Holt ran for another score.
The Tigers will take an undefeated record down to Talihina on Friday night for a key district match-up.
Idabel 28, Roland 21ROLAND - The Rangers saw a 21-7 lead melt away in the second half on Friday night as Idabel rallied for the win in the District 3A-4 opener.
Brooks Robertson threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Daniel to open the scoring before Blake Brunk scored from a yard out. Michael Kightlinger’s 82-yard punt return early in the third quarter put the Rangers up 21-7.
However, three touchdowns by Grant Hamilton allowed Idabel to come back and grab its first win of the season.
Roland slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the district ahead of Friday’s home game against Hugo.
Gore 21, Pocola 0GORE - The Pirate defense shut out Pocola on Friday night as Gore stayed undefeated.
Quarterback Logan Andrews provided the offense for the Pirates, as he scored on runs of 5 and 28 yards in the third quarter to break a scoreless deadlock. Andrews sealed the win with a 30-yard TD run in the fourth period.
Gore moved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in District A-6 with the victory while dropping Pocola to 1-3 and 1-2.
Next up for Gore is a Friday night road game at Warner.
Wagoner 46, Muldrow 6MULDROW - Wagoner took control in the first half, jumping out to a 33-6 lead over Muldrow while handing the Bulldogs their first loss.
Tracy Jones' 2-yard touchdown run had Muldrow within 8-6 in the first quarter, but the visitors responded with 25 more points before halftime to pull away.
Muldrow fell to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in District 4A-4 and will host Sallisaw on Friday night.
