The girlfriend of a Sallisaw jail inmate who escaped on Aug. 5 has been charged with harboring a fugitive from justice and obstructing an officer.
Sequoyah County Deputies Dennis Thomas and Lance Yoakum drove to Desera McCormick’s home in Marble City when seeking her boyfriend, Matthew Long.
McCormick, 28, is the girlfriend of Long. Long escaped from jail and lead police on a foot chase for hours.
Yoakum and Thomas knocked on the door and according to the report, when McCormick answered Yoakum asked her if Long was in her home.
McCormick pointed into her home and told deputies, “Search away.” After entering the home, Yoakum asked McCormick again if Long was in her home. According to the report McCormick said, “I will only tell you if I won’t get into trouble.”
McCormick then pointed toward the ceiling and Yoakum went to the attic crawl space in the living room.
Thomas and Yoakum tried to push the board closing the attic off to the side but were unable to move it. Yoakum said he could tell that something was on top of the board. The deputies finally moved the board and saw a foot. Yoakum grabbed the foot and pulled Long out of the attic.
According to the report, while the deputies were placing Long in handcuffs, McCormick began screaming and making threats at the deputies to let him go.
Yoakum reported he grabbed McCormick by the arm and told her to place her arms behind her back. McCormick tried to pull away and Yoakum was able to restrain her and place her under arrest.
McCormick was booked into the Sequoyah County Jail Aug. 5 and released on a $4,000 bond the same day.
