A 40-mile high-speed chase ended in a ditch in Paw Paw bottoms, southeast of Muldrow Monday afternoon.
Kendall Asher, 38, of Muldrow led Sallisaw police, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers and Sequoyah County Sheriff deputies on a chase at speeds that at times reached over 100 miles per hour through Sallisaw, Gans, and Muldrow.
Det. Herb Hutchinson and Deputy Greg Cox were doing surveillance on a room at the Golden Spur Motel because suspects in a burglary on Sunday were allegedly inside the motel room with over $130,000.
The chase
When an unknown man, later identified as Asher, left the motel room Hutchinson contacted Oliver and asked Oliver to make contact with the four-door gray Dodge Stratus to find out the man’s identification. When Oliver attempted to make contact, Asher pulled into the parking lot of the Cherokee Casino in Sallisaw then drove around the building and turned west on Ruth Street.
According to the report, Asher failed to stop. Asher picked up speed to over 75 miles per hour in a school zone, passed other vehicles and at one point almost hit another vehicle head on. Deputies and other officers joined in the pursuit near the intersection of J.T. Stites Boulevard and Cherokee Avenue. According to the report, Asher turned south on Kerr and almost hit another vehicle.
While Asher was driving south on U.S. Highway 59 he reached speeds of 130 miles per hour. Asher went through Gans topping speeds of 120 miles per hour.
“Asher took me on a maze of dirt roads driving over 100 miles per hour while going by on-coming motorists,” Oliver said.
OHP troopers and Sequoyah County deputies joined the pursuit when Asher left city limits.
OHP trooper Cody Hyde joined the pursuit and Oliver reported he slowed down and pulled to the side to allow Hyde to take over the pursuit.
Attempts to stop Asher were unsuccessful. Spike strips were laid down near State Highway 64B and Treat Street near Muldrow and but Asher swerved to the right to avid the sticks. Asher turned south and went through a roadblock then swerved through other law enforcement vehicles. Asher then lead the pursuit into the farmland near W.D. Mayo Dam located on the Arkansas River south of Muldrow.
“The road turned into a trail with large ruts full of water,” Oliver said. “I saw the vehicle hit a high spot in the trail and bounce into a deep water-filled rut in the trail.”
When the pursuit went into the Paw Paw Bottoms Asher’s luck ran out. Asher hit a ravine with five feet of water, which embedded his tires in the mud. Asher jumped out of his car, waded through the water and took off toward the woods. Oliver said Asher appeared to be disoriented when he jumped out of his vehicle because he fell in front of Hyde’s vehicle before running into the woods.
Still on Asher’s trail, troopers, deputies, and Sallisaw police caught up with Asher after chasing him nearly 150 yards on foot.
Asher tried to resist when officers attempted to put handcuffs on him but his attempts were short lived. Officers were able to restrain him and place the cuffs on his hands and escorted him to the police car.
When Lt. John Owens asked Asher why he ran, Asher said, “I don’t know, I guess I’m f…ing stupid.”
Hyde discovered a black zipper bag and handed it to Oliver. Oliver found a syringe and a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. Oliver reported inside the cigarette pack he found four plastic bags containing an off-white powder substance, which tested positive for methamphetamines.
According to the report while Oliver was walking Asher to his patrol car he noticed Asher had swelling on the left side of his face. Oliver took Asher to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw where he was admitted for observation. Asher was medically cleared on Tuesday and booked into the Sequoyah County Jail where he is being held without bond. Asher’s arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The money
Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart said a burglary report was taken on Sunday and the possible suspects were staying at a room in the Golden Spur Motel.
The victim of the burglary, Tommy Hines, said he arrived at his cabin around 3 p.m. Sunday and noticed a window was broken in the door. He told deputies $150,000 in cash was taken from a fire proof safe in his cabin. Deputies and Sallisaw Police began to work together investigating the burglary. A stake out was set up after a tip led authorities to believe the burglary suspect, Jacob Hines, 27, of Sallisaw was at the motel.
After the chase, Hutchinson and Cox went to the motel room to do a knock and talk. When the motel door opened they discovered a large amount of money in the room. Lockhart said Cox and Hutchinson recovered $137, 204. Hines was arrested and booked into the Sequoyah County Jail on second-degree burglary, grand larceny, and knowingly concealing stolen property. Hines was later released on a $9,000 bond.
Hines’ arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw.
So, you tell me....what kind of chance does ANYONE have of getting help to quit drugs in Sequoyah County? Thankfully, I moved away and I have now been clean since July 28,2004.
At least with him being in jail, he will not be on drugs and his family knows where he is.
Yes, Let's all pray for Kendall and his family!!!
