After a big win over Bishop McGuinness, the Sallisaw Black Diamonds had plenty of players deserving of recognition.
As a result, Sallisaw football coaches handed out nine Player of the Week awards following the 20-14 second-round playoff win over Bishop McGuinness.
Offensive linemen Matt Walkingstick, Seth Morgan, Rilee Harrison, Garrett Gladd and Logan Rea were honored for their play on offense.
“In a lot of areas it was our best performance of the year, no doubt. A big key was the offensive line—they were really, really good,” said Sallisaw head coach Craig Benson.
“Logan Rea came in the second series and played the rest of the game. He had not started a game all year, but he came in and was outstanding all night. To come in a do that was an outstanding effort on his part,” added Benson.
The defensive award was shared by senior defensive end Hayden Spencer and sophomore lineman Zack Wooten.
“Hayden wreaked havoc all night and played the best game I have ever seen him play. He had a big sack and was always around the football. Hayden also had the big hit on the fullback when they ran the option. He lowered the boom on him,” said Benson.
“Wooten was really good too. He was all over the field making tackles and he led us in tackles with nine.”
Junior Cody Hale and sophomore Dakota Petree were also singled out for their efforts.
They received Player of the Week for their performance on special teams for the Black Diamonds.
