The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office discovered 63 grams of cocaine and some marijuana during their first drug interdiction on Interstate 40 near Gore Wednesday.

“We arrested three people. Two for having felony warrants and one for trafficking 63 grams of cocaine,” Eric Helms, Sequoyah County narcotics investigator, said.

Duran Lee Delt, 29, of Spiro as taken to Sequoyah County Jail after he tried to elude deputies and allegedly get rid of the 63 grams of cocaine he was carrying. As Delt was driving east on I-40 and approaching the checkpoint he must have seen the deputies’ vehicles the, deputies reported. Delt hit the median turn around in the median and started back west.

Helms said Delt drove through the ditch and passed semi-truck trailers and other vehicles. Helms said as dust and debris was flying up Deputy Lance Yoakum, who pursued Delt, noticed an object flying out of Delt’s vehicle. Delt feft the interstate and pulled into the Webbers Falls Love’s Convenience store. Helms said when Delt got out of his vehicle at the store he said, “I was just going to use the bathroom.”

Delt was taken to Sequoyah County Jail and is being held on 55,000 bond and has a hold for Sebastian County.

Robert Paul Rera, 40 of Ocala, Fla., was arrested for possession of marijuana and on felony warrants. Rera is wanted on felony charges out of Florida and Wisconsin for being in possession of more the 20 grams of marijuana. Rera was taken to Sequoyah County Jail and is being held without bond for Marion County in Florida. Helms said they arrested another man for a felony warrant.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart said the sheriff’s department recently received a federal grant to help do drug interdiction on the interstate and federal waterways. He said the department wanted to utilize the money wisely.

Lockhart said their department is using different methods to identify wanted subjects and apprehend criminals.

“Were trying to help defer the drugs on the interstate,” Lockhart said. “We are doing it in conjunction with other agencies. Muskogee County Sheriff’s Deputies sat on the county line just in case a pursuit went into Muskogee County.”

Lockhart said, “Over all the eight-hour interdiction was a success.”
