Students test scores rise above state average

Sallisaw School Board members heard a report of district test scores during the Monday night meeting.

Mickey Campbell, special education director, spoke to the board about the percent of students who scored advanced or proficient on the 2009 Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test for grades 3 through 8.

The third grade students who tested in the district for math were at 82 percent. The state average is 66 percent.

The third grade reading test showed the students scored 80 percent advanced or proficient compared to the state average at 67 percent.

Fourth grade math for the district stood at 92 percent compared to the state average at 67 percent.

Campbell said high school students who took the 2009 End of Instruction test scored higher then the state average except in Algebra II. Algebra I test scores were the same in both the district and state testing. The test scores for the high school are:

•86 percent compared to the 73 percent state average in Geometry.

•87 percent compared to the 77 percent state average in English III.

•56 percent compared to the 63 percent state average in Algebra II.

•80 percent compared to the 80 percent state average in Algebra I.

•80 percent compared to the 70 percent state average in U.S. History.

•86 percent compared to the 77 percent state average in English II

•80 percent compared to the 72 percent state average in Biology I.

“Overall,” Campbell said, “ The students did well,”

Students must pass the end of the year test in order to receive a diploma and graduate from high school. Campbell said there are nine chances to pass the test.

In other business, the vocational programs, which consist of Business and Computer Technology, Agriculture Education, Family and Consumer Science and Broadcast Journalism, were approved. Scott Farmer, federal programs director, presented committees for the 2009-10 school year. Farmer said 10 committees did not differ from the 2008-9 school year. The committees for the 2009-10 year are

•Gifted Advisory Committee

•JOM/IEC

•North Central Association, AdvanED Committee Chairs

•Professional Development Committee

•Technology Study Team

•District Textbook Committee

•Title VII Indian Education Committee

Ron Wyrick, superintendent, said the board employed Annette Batemon as the new para-professional for the 2009-10 school year.
