Two Alabama men were hospitalized Sunday after an accident on Interstate 40 at Vian.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported Randy Neal Whitt, 54, and Altie Eugene Wilkerson, 51, both of Oneonta, Ala., were injured when Whitt became sleepy and lost control of his vehicle.
OHP Trooper Sheldon Dobbs reported Whitt was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 west on the interstate when the truck left the road on the right, traveled 324 feet then went airborne for 85 feet before impacting the roadway on State Highway 82. After the first impact the vehicle struck the guardrail on State Highway 82 and stopped.
The accident occurred at 5:23 a.m.
Whitt was transported by Pafford EMS to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw, then taken to St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa where he was admitted with head and internal trunk injuries and was listed in stable condition.
Wilkerson was transported to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., then taken to Little Rock Medical Center where he was admitted with head, arm and leg injuries and was listed in stable condition.
Dobbs reported seatbelts were in use and the pickup truck’s airbags deployed.
Dobbs was assisted by the Vian Police Department and the Vian Fire Department.
