Two Sequoyah County residents were recently arrested on various drug charges, one was sentenced to a drug program, the other will face a preliminary hearing Nov. 10.
Sonya Dianne Huddleston, 34, of Muldrow was charged Sept. 9 in Sequoyah County District Court with manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) with intent to distribute, possession of a CDS, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Forrest Derrick Rhodes, 32, of Sallisaw was charged Sept. 1 with manufacturing CDS with intent to manufacture, possession of CDS, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Rhodes was sentenced Sept. 3 to a drug abuse rehabilitation program (DARP).
Rhodes and Huddleston went through a safety checkpoint near the intersection of Loyd Henry and Opdyke Streets in Sallisaw on Aug. 27.
When the two were questioned about a driver’s license Rhodes told Sallisaw Police Detective John Weber he had an Oklahoma driver’s license but he did not have it with him.
Weber said while speaking with Rhodes he could smell alcohol. Weber asked if the two had anything illegal in the vehicle and Rhodes stated no. Weber asked both Huddleston and Rhodes to get out of the vehicle.
“When Huddleston was exiting the vehicle I heard something hit the ground. I went to the other side of the car and found a plastic cup. The cup smelled like it contained an alcoholic substance,” Weber said.
Weber began searching the vehicle and found another glass that smelled like alcohol. He also saw two pillows on the console.
“I looked between the two pillows and found a pink hand towel, a box of nasal decongestant and a white paper bag,” Weber said.
“The hand towel was rolled up and seemed to contain something.”
When Weber unrolled the towel he found a glass-smoking device with a white residue. He also found a syringe, another glass smoking device, aluminum foil, multiple twisted coffee filters, and a white powdery substance.
“Inside the twisted coffee filters was an off-red like chunk.”
Rhodes and Huddleston was taken to Sallisaw City Jail and booked in on multiple drug charges.
Huddleston has two former drug convictions in Sequoyah County. According to court records Huddleston was convicted of unlawful possession of CDS and unlawful possession of paraphernalia on April 10, 2006. She was charged the same day on a different case number for possession of CDS and unlawful possession of paraphernalia.
According to court records and information provided by Kellpro Inc. Rhodes received a five-year deferred sentence to run concurrently with previous drug offences filed against him June 19.
Rhodes can be released from the Drug Abuse Recovery Program (DARP) after six-months. When Rhodes successfully completes the program and pays court costs, probation fees, and fines in full, the state will recommend a dismissal and charges may be expunged if the DOC recommends it. After release Rhodes is to be supervised by the Department of Corrections.
Rhodes was previously charged with possession of CDS on June 19 according to court records.
