The Vian Wolverines will be looking to take another step toward securing a homefield playoff game when they host Kansas on Thursday night.

Kickoff for the District 2A-8 contest is slated for 7:30 p.m. at St. John Stadium.

Vian is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the league with four games remaining. The fifth-ranked Wolverines’ only loss was to 2A-8 leader Sequoyah and they are currently tied with three teams for second. However, Vian has already defeated two of those teams (Colcord and Adair) and will get a shot at the other when Kansas comes to town.

The Comets of head coach Eddie Barnwell posted a 3-7 record last year, but are enjoying a winning season in 2009. Kansas is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the district after getting past Westville 18-7 last week.

Vian has outscored its opponents 215-113 so far this year. Dylan Taylor leads the team in scoring with 12 touchdowns since returning from an injury to play in Week 3.

The senior running back has picked up 538 yards on 88 carries so far. Warren Zachary is next with 292 yards and seven TDs on 45 attempts. Fullback Billy Monholland has run 21 times for 227 yards and Rowdy Simon has 17 carries for 152 yards for Vian.

John Jumper is the Wolverines’ leading passer, having completed 18 of 32 attempts for 274 yards and two touchdowns. David Thornton has caught a team-high nine passes for 127 yards. Tevin Knight has six receptions for 71 yards, Shane Spears three for 61 and Colby Ross three for 39.

Vian’s defensive stat leaders include linebackers Monholland and Simon with 46.5 and 44.5 tackles, respectively. Thornton is next with 42 stops, Travis Sandlin has 36, Hunter Spencer 26, Tre Locust 20.5, Dathon Leaf 19 and Eddie Webster 18.5.

Senior defensive end Thornton has a team-best seven sacks, while Simon has four fumble recoveries and Ross has intercepted three passes for the Vian defense.

On special teams, senior Chris Peoples has made 27 of 28 extra point kicks and booted four field goals. He’s also averaging 39.4 yards on 20 punts and has put 21 of 38 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
