Warriors top Midway for 3-0 start

WEBBERS FALLS - The Warriors kept up their perfect start to the basketball season on Monday night as Webbers Falls downed Midway for a 3-0 start.
Senior center Dakota Shipley turned in a double-double and two other players scored in double figures to guide the Warriors to a 62-43 win over Midway.
The victory gives Webbers Falls an early lead in the Riverside Conference standings with a 3-0 mark after the Warriors had previously topped league rivals Braggs and Porum.
Webbers Falls trailed only briefly on Monday, but Levi Sims, Colton Carter and Craig Chappell all scored during a 7-0 run that gave the home team a 9-5 advantage midway through the first quarter.
Webbers Falls led the rest of the way while dropping the Chargers to 0-1.
Shipley paced the Warriors with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sims, who was coming off a 33-point outing in last week’s win at Porum, netted all 12 of his points in the first half. Carter finished with 11, while Chad Dandridge dropped in nine points, Chappell five and Zach Glad four.
Matt Youngblood led all scorers with 25 points for Midway, including five bombs from 3-point range.
He had 12 in the first half to keep the Chargers close. They were within 25-22 late in the second quarter, but Webbers Falls closed with another 7-0 run. Glad came off the bench to score two baskets and Sims had three points in the final seconds to left the Warriors to a 32-22 halftime edge.
Carter’s 3-pointer in the third period gave Webbers Falls a 13-point lead and Dandridge sank another trey late in the quarter to send the Warriors into the fourth stanza with a 45-36 lead.
Midway was still in the game with about six minutes left, but Webbers Falls outscored the visitors 11-0 down the stretch to seal the win.
The Warriors canned 8 of 12 shots in the fourth quarter while limiting Midway to 2 of 15 shooting.
For the game, Webbers Falls shot 47 percent (24 of 51) from the field and outrebounded Midway by a 32-27 margin.
Chappell had seven boards for the Warriors, while Sims, Colton Carter, Clifton Carter and Glad all grabbed three rebounds apiece.
The Warriors are off until Friday, when they host Schulter in a non-conference game.

The Lady Warriors dominated the fourth quarter on Monday to cruise to a Riverside Conference win over Midway.
Webbers Falls improved to 2-1 by rallying from a 29-27 halftime deficit. The Lady Warriors opened up a seven-point lead entering the fourth quarter and used a 14-1 spurt to pull away.
A Mariah Sanders lay-up had pulled the Lady Chargers within 46-43 with 5:26 left, but Shelby Martin answered with three baskets for Webbers Falls to spark the late run.
She finished with 14 points and nine rebounds and was one of three Lady Warriors to reach double digits in scoring. Junior guard Alisha Carter led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds and Rachel Humphrey chipped in 12 points and seven boards.
Heather Mickles added seven points and 10 rebounds for Webbers Falls, Katie Smith six points and six rebounds and Brooke Chappell scored two.
Webbers Falls struggled with its shooting in the first half, knocking down just 11 of 44 attempts. However, the Lady Warriors began to heat up after the break and shot 52 percent in the second half.
They also outrebounded Midway 47-29.
Sanders paced the Lady Chargers (0-1, 0-1) with 19 points from her guard spot. Skyla Van Brunt added nine and Desire Van Brunt and Haley Guthrie both scored eight.
