CHECOTAH - The Sallisaw Black Diamonds opened their baseball season with a 6-3 victory on Thursday afternoon at Checotah.

Matt Oberste powered Sallisaw offensively with a big day at the plate. The junior shortstop went 4-for-4 with a pair of singles and two doubles. Oberste drove in a run, stole two bases and scored four times.

Freshman catcher Nick Walker also had a strong day, batting 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Leftfielder Damon Lynch went 2-for-2, stole two bases and scored a run for the Black Diamonds.

Starter Trevor Prewett was the winning pitcher. The Sallisaw hurler struck out six, walked three and allowed two hits in four innings of work. Dan Jacobs got the save, pitching two innings in relief and striking out two batters.

The Sallisaw/Muldrow game scheduled for Friday was postponed due to the schools’ involvement in the basketball playoffs. The Diamonds were set to return to action on Saturday at the Jay Festival before traveling to Vian for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday.
