The Cherokee Nation is holding employment testing Wednesday for the U.S. Census Bureau. The bureau is seeking qualified candidates to fill local temporary and part-time jobs for work on the 2010 Census.

Several opportunities are available for individuals to work in their communities as census takers, supervisors, recruiters or clerks with starting pay at $10 per hour. Local census takers will locate households, explain the purpose of the census, conduct interviews and record responses on paper forms.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau Web site, www.census.gov, the census is conducted every 10 years to help determine government representation and allocations of federal funds for use on roads, parks, schools and safety.

Testing sessions are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at Cherokee Nation Career Services Sallisaw office, 1502 W. Choctaw. Sessions are 90 minutes long with the last session starting at 5 p.m. Testing is the initial step for employment consideration. Applicants should bring their driver’s license, Social Security card and CDIB card. Testing is open to all area residents. For more information, call Kelley Rhodes at (918) 776-0416 or Brad Eubanks with Cherokee Nation Career Services at (918) 453-5555.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
