The preliminary hearing for Leon Markel Winston Jr., on a forgery and stolen credit or debit card charge, was postponed Tuesday.

Winston, 41, is also charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in the county jail without bond for the stabbing and beating death of Darla Caughman. Caughman, 62, who was found in her home on U.S. Highway 59, about one-quarter mile north of the highway’s intersection with State Highway 101, on the morning of Sept. 27.

The district attorney’s office has filed a bill of particulars in the murder case, asking for the death penalty.

In the forgery case, Assistant District Attorney Ryan Wyrick asked Special District Judge Dennis Sprouse to continue the hearing so the district attorney’s office could endorse and subpoena two additional witnesses.

Sprouse continued the hearing to 1:30 p.m. March 10.

In the forgery case, Winston is charged with forging checks at a bank and at Cox Corner Store. Sprouse set a $15,000 bond in that case, against the district attorney’s objection.

The bill of particulars asking for the death penalty also notes that Winston was convicted of several felonies, in a North Carolina court.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
