The two titles helped Sallisaw to a third-place finish in the team standings with 130.5 points. Catoosa crowned six champions to take first with 224 and Bristow was second with 152 points.
Davenport pinned his first three opponents to reach the finals at 145 pounds and a showdown with Catoosa’s Ryan Rosales in a battle of defending state champs.
“That was an awesome match,” said Sallisaw coach Darrel Hume. “It was the highlight of the evening and everyone wanted to watch it because it wasn’t just two state champions, it was two of the top wrestlers in the nation.”
Davenport got a reverse late in the match to knot the score at 6-6. In overtime, he took down Rosales for an 8-6 sudden death victory.
Garrison also had a close match in the finals, edging Fort Gibson’s Robby Nunez 2-1 in the 130-pound title bout.
“Chayse went in with an attitude that he wasn’t going to let Nunez beat him and he wrestled hard for all six minutes,” said Hume.
Garrison was 3-0 at the regional with a fall and a major decision earlier in the tournament.
Sallisaw had a third finalist on Saturday, but Robert Copeland lost to Dallas Bailey of Catoosa and took second place. Copeland won his first bout with a technical fall and won a major decision in the semifinals while earning a berth to the state tournament.
“He finished second to nationally-ranked Dallas Bailey of Catoosa and just did a great job,” said Hume.
Nick Copeland and Ryan Harwell also qualified for state with top-four finishes. Nick Copeland won a 6-2 decision in the consolation finals at 152 to place third. Harwell came in fourth at 125.
