Vian improved to 21-14 with the victory, which capped a two-game sweep of the Yellowjackets to advance to the regional tournament.
The Wolverines had a big day at the plate as Zach Truett and Hunter Spencer both hammered out three hits and three RBIs. Outfielder John Steely drove in another four runs on two hits for Vian, which began to take control in the top of the third inning.
Dylan Taylor’s two-run double handed the home team a 6-2 lead and the Wolverines added six more runs in the top of the fourth. Steely’s two-run single was the biggest hit of the inning and Billy Monholland, Truett, Spencer and Dustin Pickup all collected RBIs as the Vian lead swelled to 12-3.
The Wolverines continued to pull away in the top of the fifth. Taylor hit an RBI single, Spencer singled in two more runs and Pickup doubled to the left field corner to drive in the final run of the game.
Pickup, who was the starting pitcher for Vian, then took the mound to finish off the Yellowjackets in the bottom half of the fifth. He struck out the final batter while improving his record to 4-1 this spring.
The run rule victory was a lot less dramatic than Vian’s 3-2 extra inning victory in Game 1 on Thursday night.
Westville took a 2-0 lead in that game, but Vian rallied as Dillon Craighead blasted a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning.
The Wolverines came out on top in the eighth inning after Tevin Knight raced home on a passed ball for the winning run.
Truett was the winning pitcher for Vian in the district opener.
