Two Sallisaw residents were recently arrested for various drug-related violations after a search warrant was issued for their home located near a child care center and a Little League soccer facility.

Donald Lee Sumpter, 47, and Carrie Suzette Sumpter, 32, both of Sallisaw, were arrested on May 1 after a police investigation uncovered several drug paraphernalia items and methamphetamine located in the home.

At about 6:30 a.m. Sallisaw Police Officer Herb Hutchinson along with Sallisaw officers served a narcotics search warrant at the Sumpter’s home on North Washington Street in Sallisaw.

Officers announced they were there on a police search warrant for illegal drugs. Police gained entry through the front door and removed both suspects. In the bedroom officers located one-year-old twin children. Once the children and suspects were removed from the home Hutchinson started his search.

In the bedroom police uncovered a glass-smoking device with burnt residue, which field-tested positive for methamphetamine, a plastic baggie containing a white powder substance, and a cut straw with residue. Several other items commonly used by drug addicts were also located throughout the residence.

After reading both suspects the Miranda Warning, Carrie told officers that she was going to sell the methamphetamines for money to pay the electric bill and that they used the drugs in their bedroom so the children could not see them.

Hutchinson tried to contact the Department of Human Services in regards to the children, but released them to their grandmother.

Both were taken into custody and booked in to the city jail on charges of possession within 1,000 feet of a public or private educational institution, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of controlled dangerous substance in presence of a minor child times two. Donald had previous charges of manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance in 2002.

Both suspects were thrasferred to the county jail, and charged with various drug-related charges in Sequoyah County District Court on May 8. Donald’s bond was set at $50,000. Carrie was released on a $20,000 bond Thursday and as of press time Donald was still in the county jail.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
