A Moffett man was injured May 29 during an accident at his home and died in a Tulsa hospital May 31 of massive head injuries.

David Bailey, 20, and a friend were preparing a barrel to be used to hold a campfire for a birthday party Bailey was hosting at his home when the accident occurred.

Both men had reportedly made several attempts to remove the lid when it was decided to use a grinder.  When Bailey began using the grinder it is believed an explosion resulted due to chemicals inside the barrel.

Kathy Luper, Moffett Mayor, said complete details of the incident were still under investigation.

Luper said it is believed a spark from the grinder-ignited chemicals inside the barrel throwing the grinder into Bailey’s face.

“It was a tremendous explosion,” Luper said. “I was about eight blocks away when I heard it.”

Luper said the barrel is being sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation in order to determine what chemical was in it at the time of the explosion.
