Larry Eugene Walden, 57, of Stigler is suspected of robbing banks in Sallisaw, Poteau, and McAlester and in Fort Smith and, was arrested by Yell County authorities at the Economy Inn in Dardanelle Monday.
Sgt. Levi Risley of the Fort Smith Police Department said Fort Smith investigators were able to estimate the area of Walden’s whereabouts by triangulating his cell phone activity.
“We knew what general area he was in and told Pope County his whereabouts,” Risley said.
Pope County authorities notified Yell County, Dardanelle and Russellville police departments and after the authorities were informed of Walden’s whereabouts Yell County authorities spotted Walden’s silver, newer model Ford F-150 pickup at the Economy Inn.
Risley said Yell County authorities arrested Walden when he walked out of his motel room. He said Fort Smith police arrived on the scene and took Walden into custody.
“The arrest was made due to good solid detective work. The detectives went back to the basics, did what they were trained to do and it paid off,” Risley said.
During the search of the motel room authorities found clothing that may have been used in some of the robberies and an undisclosed amount of cash according to authorities.
According to Haskell County court records, Walden has had prior arrest for public intoxication in October 2007, driving under the influence in October 2008, a civil money judgment under $10,000 and has had a protective order placed against him in October 2007 as well.
Walden is suspected of robbing Bancfirst in McAlester on March 27, Arvest Bank in Poteau on April 20, National Bank of Sallisaw on April 30 and First National Bank of Fort Smith June 12.
