A Roland man was charged with a felony assault count resulting from an alleged domestic dispute with his wife.

Steven Walker, 40, was charged, June 17, with one count of assault and battery by strangulation and one count of domestic assault and battery in presence of a minor.

Michelle Walker spoke with Cindy Smith, an investigator with the district attorney’s office. She told Smith her 14-year-old, 10-year-old and 5-year-old children were home at the time.

Michelle Walker told Smith on June 7 that Steven Walker became upset when she returned home from the store with the wrong air filters. She said Steven Walker picked up the air filter and threw it at her, and the filter grazed her head. According to the report Steven Walker picked up the air filter again and threw it at her hitting her in the leg.

The 14-year-old female walked over to Steven Walker and told him to leave her mom alone. According to the report Steven Walker started toward the 14-year-old and Michelle Walker blocked him. Steven Walker then hit Michelle Walker in the jaw with his left fist.

The 14-year-old grabbed a cell phone that was lying on the table and took off running.

According to the report, Steven Walker went after the 14-year-old and threw her into a wall. The 14-year-old fell and the two began to wrestle for the phone. Michelle Walker told Smith she was trying to get Steven Walker away from her daughter but Steven Walker kept pushing her away. Michelle Walker said Steven Walker wrapped his left arm around her 14-year-old daughter’s neck and put her in a headlock. Michelle told Smith she watched as her daughter’s face began to turn red and she appeared to have trouble breathing.

“I started yelling at him to stop,” Michelle Walker said.

Steven Walker got the phone away from the 14-year-old let go of her neck and threw the phone toward the wall. Michelle Walker ran to the neighbors to call police.

The police arrived and spoke with Steven Walker who reportedly said, “I remember shoving someone and a picture being broken then taking a phone from the 14-year-old. I believe I hit Michelle Walker in the face but I’m not sure. I have been drinking.”

Steven Walker was placed under arrest and taken to the Sequoyah County Jail. He was released on a $15,000 bond June 10 and the case is set for preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
