Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, who is running for governor, will be the featured speaker at the annual Sequoyah County Democrat Womens’ picnic to begin at 6:30 p.m. July 18. The picnic will be held at Sallisaw Creek Park on U.S. Highway 64, on Sallisaw’s west side.
Cindy Smith, club president, said other speakers at the picnic will be State Sen. Kenneth Corn (D-Poteau) who is running for lieutenant governor; State Rep. Glen “Bud” Smithson (D-Sallisaw); State Rep. Neil Brannon (D-Arkoma); State Rep. Ed Cannaday (D-Porum ); and State Sen. Jim Wilson (D-Tahlequah).
The barbecue dinner will cost $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Smith said the menu includes barbecue, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, relishes, a drink and dessert.
“The members of the Threads of Love are making the desserts,” Smith said. “They have been extremely kind to us.”
Members of Threads of Love make personal items for those critically and terminally ill.
Smith invited everyone to attend.
“You can’t go wrong on this deal,” Smith said. “And remember to bring your lawn chairs. This is a chance to visit with your representatives, senators and others and ask them questions. Also enjoy the food and the Democratic fellowship.”
