Ten Sequoyah County companies are joining ranks to create the Greater Sequoyah County chapter of the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association (OSHBA), signaling continued optimism in Oklahoma’s housing industry.

The chapter will receive a charter certificate at its first meeting scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce conference room..

“Oklahoma’s housing market is still ranked by Forbes magazine as one of top in the nation,” said chapter president Rich Looper.

“The Federal Housing Finance Agency has identified our state as one of only two that has experienced an increase in the value of new and existing houses in the last quarter of last year and first quarter of this year,” Looper said.

“By creating this chapter, home builders in Sequoyah County are sending the message that they are optimistic about their future and other Oklahoma communities should be, too.”

For a local association to be certified, it must have a minimum of 10 members: five builders, developers or remodelers, and five associates, which includes suppliers, manufacturers, architects, engineers, real estate brokers, lenders, attorneys and other industry professionals.

Founding members are:

—Prairie Sky Investments LLC

—Chad Williams Construction/Fawn Hollow Development LLC

—Fortnight Construction

—Looper Quality Homes

—Gipson Construction LLC

—Professional Pest Control Co.

—Century 21 Properties Realty

—E.H. Masonry

—Wright’s Electric Heating and Air Inc.

Mike Means, OSHBA executive vice president, will present the certificate to Looper, who encouraged others to join and take advantage of the member benefits.

Those benefits include information on national trends, existing and proposed rules and regulations and reduced rates for workers’ compensation, liability and health insurance.

Cost of an annual membership is about the extra amount a non-member would pay for workers’ compensation insurance to construct just one home, said Looper.

“It’s a good trade-off,” he said.

The Greater Sequoyah County chapter is the 12th association in the state to be certified through OSHBA and the National Association of Home Builders.

OSHBA has more than 3,000 members statewide. The association is dedicated to providing safe, quality and affordable housing for the state’s citizens.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
