An official said Matthew Ray Long, 24, of Van Buren, Ark., was picked up for public intoxication on Tuesday and was being held at the Van Buren Police Department.
Lt. Brent Grill with the Van Buren Police Department said Long has a warrant for his arrest for theft of property and contempt. Grill said Long has been arrested several times.
Police said Long remains at large and was last seen around Chickasaw and Ash Streets in Sallisaw. Long was wearing a jail striped green outfit but did take off the shirt while he was running. Long is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 195 pounds with dark brown hair and brown eyes. Officials said he might be barefoot.
Police Chief Shaloa Edwards said Long was doing laundry when he escaped. Edwards said it is possible that Long went through the sally port door.
Timothy Sumpter, 24, of Sallisaw, escaped from custody about 10:30 a.m. and led police on a foot chase through the streets of Sallisaw. Sallisaw police officers captured Sumpter near the 600 block of Creek Avenue in Sallisaw around noon on Wednesday.
Sumpter was picked up by Sallisaw police officers on three outstanding warrants and brought into the Sallisaw City Jail. Sumpter is believed to have escaped through the sally port door also. Edwards said he suspected the sally port door was not properly shut.
Sumpter has a history of criminal activities which include, assault and battery times two, uttering forged instruments, injury of a minor child, knowingly concealing stolen property, placing obscene threats through a phone call, transporting an open container, and harassing telephone calls.
Edwards said an investigation is underway as to how the two men escaped from custody.
