Football roundup: Muldrow, Vian, Gore, Sallisaw, Central open with wins

ROLAND - Donathan Caudill scored the winning touchdown with a 40-yard punt return late in the game to lift the Muldrow Bulldogs to a 20-14 win at Roland on Friday night.

Caudill’s return came with 2:20 left and capped a second-half comeback for Muldrow as the Bulldogs claimed their fourth straight win over rival Roland.

The Bulldogs (1-0) took an early lead on Justin Shofner’s 1-yard touchdown run, but Jeremy Morris evened the score at 6-6 for Roland with a 4-yard TD run later in the first quarter.

Blake Brunk put Roland on top late in the half after blocking a Muldrow punt deep in Bulldog territory. That set up his 9-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Giles with 3.4 seconds left before halftime.

Muldrow rallied in the third quarter as Caudill tossed a 17-yard TD pass to Jake Peterson, knotting the score at 13-13 with 4:40 to go in the third.

The Bulldogs will host Spiro on Friday night while Roland (0-1) will visit Westville.

Vian 40, Hartshorne 26

VIAN - In a battle of 2008 district champions, the Wolverines outlasted Hartshorne to claim a season-opening win.

Warren Zachary and Billy Monholland each ran for two touchdowns, but Vian wasn't able to pull away until Chris Peoples nailed a 40-yard field goal and Terrance Hampton scored on a 6-yard run to seal the win.

Vian (1-0) will travel to Panama on Friday night for another non-district game.

Sallisaw 41, Stilwell 12

STILWELL - Sallisaw quarterback Matt Oberste ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more to lead the Black Diamonds to a 41-12 rout of Stilwell on Friday night.

Oberste scored on runs of 69, 28 and 65 yards. The senior also connected with Andrew Miller for a 25-yard touchdown pass and hit Russell Kennedy with an 89-yard strike.

Jeromy Davenport scored the other Sallisaw TD with a 3-yard run as the Diamonds moved to 1-0 with the season-opening win.

Next up for Sallisaw is a Friday night road game at Seminole.

Central 21, Foyil 14 Central quarterback Shade Kutil ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Tigers rallied for a 21-14 win over visiting Foyil on Friday night.

Kutil scored on a 7-yard run and added the conversion to pull Central even at 14-14 with 7:38 remaining. After the Tiger defense held Foyil on fourth down, Central drove 59 yards for the winning touchdown. Kutil got it with a 1-yard run and Dakota Tanner booted the extra point with 22.9 seconds left.

Ryan Rogers scored earlier on 4-yard run for Central in the first half.

The Tigers (1-0) will visit Savanna on Friday.

Gore 41, Heavener 13

HEAVENER - The Pirates jumped out to a 27-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back while cruising to a season-opening win over the Wolves.

Junior quarterback Logan Andrews ran for two touchdowns and passed for 122 yards as Gore moved to 1-0. Colten Clay rushed for 87 yards on eight carries for the Pirates.
