The Grizzlies opened their season last week with an 18-12 loss at Class B fourth-ranked Weleetka and are searching for their first win of 2009.
To get it, the Grizzlies will have to slow down a Cave Springs team that piled up 405 yards of offense in a 34-20 win over Bluejacket last week.
The Hornets’ victory was their first in a season-opener since the 2004 season and the 34 points was their highest offensive output since a 2007 win over Rejoice Christian.
Cave Springs quarterback Earvin Johnson completed 10 of 19 passes last week for 197 yards and tied the school record for most touchdown passes in a game with four. He connected with Byron Duncan for TD strikes of 12, 26 and 16 yards and also hooked up with Hunter Smith for a 55-yard touchdown pass.
Duncan, who had four receptions for 66 yards aganst Bluejacket, tied a Cave Springs record with his three touchdown catches.
Smith added a 6-yard touchdown run and was Cave Springs’ leading rusher with 123 yards on 19 carries. Two Leaf Ross added 44 yards on five carries for the Hornets.
Although Cave Springs is off to a strong start under second-year head coach Michael Foreman, Gans will be hoping to maintain its dominance of the series which began in 1998.
The Grizzlies have won 10 of 11 meetings against the Hornets, including a 52-12 victory in 2008.
