It’s just the third week of the season, but the Gans Grizzlies are already getting set for one of their biggest games.

The Class B No. 10-ranked Grizzlies will travel to Porter on Friday night to take on the third-ranked Pirates in an early showdown in District B-4.

Gans will not only be looking to take an early lead for a district title, the Grizzlies are also looking for a little payback for two straight losses to the Pirates.

Gans beat Porter in the Pirates’ first season of eight-man football in 2006, but it’s been all Porter since then. The Pirates beat Gans 50-8 in 2007 and mercy-ruled the Grizzlies 46-0 last season.

“They beat us twice in a row and beat us bad on our home field,” said Gans head coach Trent Holt. “There’s definitely some revenge there. The kids are pretty excited to play.”

Gans is 1-1 after a narrow loss to highly-ranked Weleetka in its opener and a 70-20 rout of Cave Springs this past Friday.

Porter beat Depew 28-22 in Week 1 and topped Midway 50-20 last Friday for a 2-0 start.

Some of the top players for Porter include fullback/linebacker Marcus Bruner (6-1, 215, junior), quarterback Marcus Scarborough (6-0, 165, sophomore), tailback Nick Scarborough (5-7, 155, sophomore), tight end/defensive Erik Ridgway (5-10, 180, junior).

In the win over Midway, Nick Scarborough scored on runs of 8, 25, 5 and 15 yards. Bruner added a 58-yard TD gallop and Marcus Scarborough threw a pair of 30-yard touchdown passes to Ridgway and Derik Myers

“They’re a good team and they’re fundamentally sound,” said Holt. “They have a big fullback in Bruner, who’s a big ol’ strong kid that’s getting some looks from colleges. And they have a little tailback who runs the stretch play real well.”

Holt believes his team is capable of winning Friday]s game, but only if the Grizzlies bring their “A” game.

“We have to play well to win and we have to play well to stay in the ball game too. If we have a bunch of turnovers and penalties, it could get ugly,” said Holt. “But we match up pretty well with them. I think if we play well, we have a really good shot.”

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
