John R. Bennett, a lifelong resident of Sequoyah County, announced Thursday that he is starting an exploratory committee to look into the possibility of being a candidate in the 2010 State House of Representatives District 2 election.

Bennett has served as a U.S. Marine for over 15 years. He is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and has been involved in state and federal government for many years.

Bennett is currently involved with the Sequoyah County Democratic Party, and the Young Democrats in Sequoyah County. He is also a member of Congressman Dan Boren’s Veterans Advisory Committee.

Bennett was born and raised in Vian, and after discharging from the active duty Marine Corps moved his family to Sallisaw where he currently resides. Bennett attended school at Vian and is a graduate from the University of Phoenix and Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas.

Bennett is a member of the National Rifle Association, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion, and the Marine Corps League.

Bennett said he’s interested in what residents of Sequoyah County have to say and encourages them to contact him to make comments. Bennett said he also welcomes anyone who wants to assist in the committee.

Bennett may be contacted at (918) 774-3048, or by e-mail at bennettj_98@yahoo.com or by visiting www.myspace.com/bennettforstatehouse, www.bennettforstatehouse.com or www.facebook.com/bennett.statehouse.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
