Webbers Falls travels to Muskogee County this Friday night as the Warriors meet Midway in a District C-4 contest at Council Hill’s James Bayless Stadium.

The kickoff at Council Hill, which is located about 11 miles northwest of Checotah on State Highway 72, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Webbers Falls is 0-7 for the season and 0-5 in the district after the Warriors dropped a 40-0 decision to Claremore Christian last Thursday night at Smokey Cox Field.

Midway is 3-4 and 3-1 after the Chargers were defeated by sixth-ranked Maud (29-18) last week.

Webbers Falls scrimmaged Midway in the preseason at Gans, so Warriors’ head coach Brandon Luttrell is familiar with the Chargers.

“They’re a big and physical team,” Luttrell said. “We have to come out and play because they’re a tough team to beat, they always are. We saw them scrimmage in the preseason at Gans, and they were physical and athletic.”

Four of Midway’s top players are tailback/defensive back Stoney Rodriguez (5-foot-8, 147-pound senior), running backs/defensive backs Mike Campbell (5-8, 139, junior) and Bryton Newton (6-0, 144, senior) and offensive lineman/defensive back Kaylon Brownfield (5-9, 144, senior).

In its 42-0 win over Kinta in Week 6, Rodriguez rushed for 148 yards on 19 carries and scored on runs of 21, 2, 4 and 6 yards. Campbell rushed for 91 yards on six carries and a 35-yard touchdown for the Chargers. For the season, Rodriguez has rushed for 917 yards and 11 touchdowns on 122 carries.

“They’ll run straight at us on offense, and they’ll run some reverses and some trick plays,” said Luttrell. “They’ll hit us and hit us hard, I believe, because they did it in the preseason. They line up in double-tight I and sometimes put their fullback on the wing.

“On defense we have to be quick off the ball and be physical. Our line (defense and offense) needs to be a little more seasoned than they have been in the past.”

Four other key players are tight end/linebacker Richard Ford (5-8, 157, junior), wide receiver/ running back/defensive back Michael Frazier (5-7, 140, senior), two-way lineman Jake Stonebarger (6-3, 305, senior) and offensive lineman/linebacker Jake Hollingshed (5-8, 227, junior).

Frazier carried the ball five times for 29 yards and ran for a 7-yard TD against Kinta.

“On defense they’ll run a 3-3 stack with a middle linebacker and two outside linebackers,” remarked Luttrell. “We have to spread them out on offense, and I hope our passing game works better this week. Claremore’s defensive line was too fast, but if we can give our quarterback a little more time I think we can get some good yardage by passing the ball. I’d like to see our passing game pick up this week.”

Four additional key players are quarterback/defensive lineman Cody Barnard (5-8, 139, senior), wide receiver/defensive back Matt Youngblood (6-0, 141, junior), center/linebacker Joseph Madewell (6-0, 172, junior) and two-way lineman Chris Alred (5-11, 302, senior).

Larry Childers, who was in charge of the football program at Webbers Falls for five seasons before moving to Midway in 2000, is the head coach of the Chargers. Childers left Midway in 2002 to become an assistant at Hilldale before returning to the Council Hill school earlier this year.

The Chargers defeated Webbers Falls 36-28 in 2008.
