Sallisaw Police are investigating the vandalism of nearly 60 vehicles at the Blue Ribbon Auto Group in Sallisaw.

Police Chief Shaloa Edwards said police were called to the Blue Ribbon Auto Group dealership at 706 S. Kerr Blvd at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in response to a report of cars with mirrors and radios missing and broken windows. He said some cars had scratches down the entire body.

“I’ve been in this type of business for 35 years,” Ron Nelson, assistant service manager, said, “and I have never seen this much damage in all those years.”

Nelson said he used to work for a car dealership in Sherman, Texas, in 1983. He said the vandals did more damage then a large hailstorm that hit when he worked at the dealership in Texas.

Edwards said the vandalism happened between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. and the vandals hit new and used cars.

“The damage was extensive. I’m sure it’s over $100,000,” Edwards said.

Robert Spencer said front and back windshields were broken, mirrors were knocked off and on Tuesday afternoon employees were still counting the cars that were hit.

“Radios and CDs were taken. There is a lot of damage just to be taking a few radios,” Spencer said. “While detectives gather information were going to be doing a lot of cleaning.”

“The dealership has had little theft or vandals in my 15 years. We’ve been lucky.”

Spencer said despite the damage and the clean up effort the dealership remains open for business.

“The employees spent most of the day Tuesday cleaning up glass and applying plastic on the broken windshields,” Spencer said.

Edwards said there are no suspects but a few leads have come into the police station.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
