Donald Hodges and Crystal Jones woke up early Tuesday to find flames near their bed. Brushy and Marble City Volunteer firefighters fought the blaze for an hour in freezing temperatures. No one was injured in the fire.

A home near Brushy was gutted by a fire Tuesday morning and left a family of five homeless.
The Brushy Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the home of Donald Hodges and Crystal Jones at 6 a.m. in below freezing temperatures Firefighters fought to save the family’s home, but the house was gutted.
Jones said her three daughters live in the home with her and Hodges. She said her 7 year old had stayed the night at her grandmother’s house and wasn’t home at the time of the fire. Jones’ 9 year old and 3 year old were sleeping in their beds.
“We ran to wake the kids up and they wanted to know what was going on. They wanted to grab their shoes and clothes and we just told them to go get out the house it was on fire!” Jones said.
Fire Chief Bobby Caughman said it took 12 Brushy and Marble City firefighters almost an hour to put the fire out. He said one of the firefighters reported an oxygen tank exploded. He said no one was injured during the fire. Caughman said he believes the fire started by an electric heater.
“It was a total loss, there was very little to salvage,” he said.
Hodges said the smoke detector in their home woke he and Jones up. He said an area near the bed was on fire.
“Everything was burned,” Jones said. “Even our Christmas tree.”
Jones said the Red Cross contacted her family and got them a motel room for two nights.
“We also received a card to get us food and a few clothes,” she said. “After that I don’t know what we are going to do yet.”
Jones said her 9 year old wears an extra large in shirts and pants are a 16-18. Jones’ 7 year old wears a 10-12 and her 3 year old wears a four toddler. To donate personal care items or clothing Jones can be reached at (918) 315-1821.
