A 57-year-old Sallisaw man has confessed to police he molested an 11-year-old girl on several occasions, police reported.

Roger Lamar Sanders was charged in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, on Dec. 23 with two counts of lewd molestation. On Dec. 30 Sanders was charged with four more counts of lewd molestation.

According to the report, the first charges on Dec. 23 stem from two separate incidents that happened in June and December. The second set of charges stem from four separate incidents that happened in October. A warrant for Sanders arrest was issued Dec. 23.

In the first report on Dec. 17 the juvenile girl told officers when she was in Sanders bedroom playing on the computer and Sanders came in and asked her if he could feel her and began touching her. According to the report, she told Sanders to stop but he wouldn’t. Sanders allegedly told the juvenile girl if she told anyone she would not be allowed to play on the computer anymore.

According to the report she told officers Sanders and she had been fishing at least 10 to 15 times. She said every time they went fishing Sanders would put his hands in her pants and touch her private area.

Officers interviewed Sanders on Dec. 23. According to the second report, Sanders confessed to allegedly touching the juvenile girl on several occasions during fishing trips. Sanders told officers that he would take the juvenile girl fishing with him and she would sit on his lap and he would stick his hands in her panties. Sanders also told officers he would stick his hands up her shirt. Sanders was booked into the Sequoyah County Jail Dec. 23.

Fort Smith Police detectives responded to the Sallisaw Police Department in reference to the juvenile girl being sexually abused while in Fort Smith, Ark.  The detectives learned that the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and Sallisaw Police Department had conducted an investigation on similar complaints made by the juvenile girl.

Fort Smith detectives interviewed the juvenile girl and Sanders.  After conferring with the Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Sanders in Sebastian County on four counts of second-degree sexual assault with a $75,000 bond.

Sanders was booked in the Sequoyah County Jail on Dec. 28. Sanders is being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond on the two counts of lewd molestation and a $50,000 bond on the four counts of lewd molestation. A hold has been placed on Sanders for Sebastian County.

Sanders arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 6 in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
