The annual Sallisaw Merchant’s Christmas Open House will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Judy Martens, Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce executive vice president, said the open house, sponsored by the chamber and which features chamber-member businesses, will offer delightful shopping and refreshments to all shoppers.

The chamber will also be giving away four gift baskets filled with items donated by chamber members, including gift certificates for merchandise, dining out and other goodies. Shoppers may register for the gift baskets at any of the participating merchants. The winners of the gift baskets will be notified by telephone Tuesday. Martens also urged shoppers to stop by the chamber office at the corner of Cherokee and Wheeler Avenue.

“The first 140 will get Christmas brooches as the chamber’s gift to them,” Martens said. ”We will also have goodies and refreshment at the chamber office.”

The participating merchants are Aroma’s Coffee Shop, Blue Ribbon Auto, Bonita’s Bibles & Books, Brenda’s Flowers, Candy Bouquet, Charlie’s Chicken, Felts Shoes, Hardees, Karen’s Krafts & Gifts, Long John Silver/A & W, Maria’s, Mazzio’s Pizza, Mr. Jiff, Ole South Pancake House, Simple Simon’s Pizza, Sonic Drive In, The Flower Cottage, The Green House, The Sign Company, Tractor Supply Co., Western Sizzlin and White’s Jewelry.

Christmas horse-drawn carriage rides will also be available again this year, and shoppers who want to get into the spirit of the season may catch a ride on the carriage, which will be parked on Wheeler Avenue.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
