Overturned plants and tables and nearly $1,000 in damage were left in the wake of vandals who broke into Sallisaw High School's agriculture building and greenhouse on Ruth Street between 5 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday.

According to a Sallisaw Police Officer Houston Murray's report, the break-in was reported at 11 a.m. Friday.

On Friday, Murray was sent to the school's agriculture department on a break-in call. Once at the location, the school's agriculture instructor, Roger Stites, and Ernie Martens, high school principal, met with Murray.

Stites showed Murray the back door to the building. Murray reported that someone had taken a bar of square tubing and beat the window and the protective screen, allowing them access to the lock on the inside. The suspects then entered the building, but did not take anything or destroy anything, Murray reported.

Stites then showed police the greenhouse. Inside, the suspects had turned over every table and a large shelf damaging the plant stock. No other items were touched in the greenhouse. The suspects also turned over an old barbecue grill and broke out the glass.

Stites estimated the damage to be $500 in plants and $400 to the door.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
