A rural Vian resident - Johnny Workman, 45 - was booked into the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw Wednesday evening on charges of second-degree murder.

Workman is suspected of the shooting death of another rural Vian resident, Lester Dalton Jr., 47.

Roger Fuller, investigator with the Sequoyah County's Sheriff's Office, said Thursday that the report on the shooting was received about 4:30 p.m., and when officers arrived they found Workman at his trailer home on Moonshine Road, northwest of Vian, and Dalton dead from three gunshot wounds. Fuller said officers recovered at .22-caliber pistol at the scene.

Workman surrendered to authorities without a struggle, Fuller added.

The case is still under investigation, Fuller said. What authorities knew as of Thursday was that Workman and Dalton had apparently been involved in a physical fight. Both men were armed with guns and Workman allegedly shot Dalton three times, once in the arm, once in the leg, and once in the upper body. Fuller said Dalton did not die immediately, but was dead when officers arrived.

Fuller said it is not believed that Dalton threatened anyone with his gun.

Dalton's body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Tulsa, and Fuller said he is waiting on the medical examiner's report.

Both the suspect and the victim were tested for alcohol consumption, Fuller said.

"It is believed that alcohol was involved," he said. "We did the alcohol test on Workman and the medical examiner will do the blood test on Dalton's body."

Investigators are still collecting evidence at the scene and interviewing possible witnesses, Fuller said, adding that at least one person heard the shots fired. Since the case is still under investigation Fuller said he could not release the witnesses names or more information about the witnesses and what they saw.

"Right now we're just trying to gather evidence and get it to the lab in Tahlequah," Fuller said, adding most likely that the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) will most likely send the collected evidence to the OSBI lab in Oklahoma City for complete testing.

Fuller said the OSBI has not been officially contacted to assist with this case, as they were with an apparent murder believed to have occurred Saturday north of Sallisaw, because no suspect was immediately apparent in the first case.

In that case Darla Lovern Caughman, 62, was found dead in her home from one or more stab wounds, according to the OSBI. The OSBI is continuing the investigation into Caughman's death.

Formal second-degree murder charges will most likely be filed against Workman next week, a spokesman for the Sequoyah County District Attorney's Office said, after the district attorney reviews the reports submitted by the investigating officers.
