HULBERT - Sallisaw regained the Maverick Conference championship on Saturday as the Black Diamonds had wrestlers place in 10 of the 14 weight classes.

Jet Shell, Jeromy Davenport, Logan Byrd and Ethan Branham all won titles for Sallisaw to lead the Diamonds to their second conference title in three years.

Sallisaw tallied 170 team points to edge runner-up Fort Gibson by 17. Defending champion McLoud came in third with 107 points.

Shell won all three of his bouts at 112 pounds, including two by fall. He pinned Stilwell’s Storm Paden in the final.

Davenport was the champion at 145 pounds. The junior standout pinned his first two opponents before earning an 8-5 decision in the final against Hunter Muskrat of Stilwell.

Byrd captured the title at 189 pounds with an 11-7 decision against Michael Cain of Okmulgee.

Branham pinned two of his three opponents at the tournament, including Jay’s Justin York in the championship bout at 215 pounds.

Four other Diamonds reached the finals. J.J. Hamilton (103 pounds), Ty Martinez (119), Chayse Garrison (135) and Jeff Byrd (heavyweight) all finished as runners-up.

Willy DeShazo and Jake Fitzsimmons both placed third for the Diamonds at 125 and 171, respectively.

Fourteen schools competed at the conference tournament, but Vian was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict with the Junior High All-State Tournament.

These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher.
