Richard L. Gray, Sequoyah County District Attorney, announced Monday that Cornelius Artis' parole has been denied.

Gray said the parole hearing was held April 18 in Oklahoma City. Assistant District Attorney Kyle Waters and Victim Witness Coordinator Amanda Grizzle of Sallisaw represented the victim and Sequoyah County District Attorney's office at the hearing.

Artis was sent to prison after his probation was revoked in June 2004. Artis had been on seven years probation for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and providing false information to a police officer. Artis' probation was revoked on various infractions including failing to report to his probation officer and failing to pay restitution.

The convictions for which he is serving two sentences - one for seven years and one for one year - include assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and malicious injury to a motor vehicle, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Gray said, "If you are sent to prison for a specific term of years, you should serve that time. I do not believe prison should be a revolving door."

Artis, 25, is incarcerated at the Cimarron Correctional Facility in Cushing.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
