Rogers was a candidate for the post in a special election held Feb. 14 to replace Cleon Harrell. Harrell left the post at the end of 2005 to become director of the Cookson Hills Community Action Foundation.
In the special primary election, Rogers lost by only 13 votes to Mike Huff. Huff went on to win a special election against Republican candidate Jay Fleetwood, and now serves as the District 3 commissioner. Huff has announced he will seek re-election.
The upcoming election is the regular election for the District 3 commissioner's post.
Rogers said, "After the Feb. 14 election I received numerous calls and personal visits from many of you in the community offering your continued support of my candidacy for county commissioner of District 3. I must say I enjoyed visiting with many past friends and enjoyed making new ones.
"I believe in the job I can do for District 3 and because of my desire and commitment to do so, I announce my candidacy for county commissioner."
Rogers said he looks forward to meeting District 3 residents. He said, "If I don't get to you shortly, I invite you to stop by Gem's Pawn & Gun in Sallisaw and introduce yourself. Together, we can make a difference."
The primary election is slated for July 25. The filing period for the primary is June 5 through 7.
