The candidates, who were in the third through the sixth grades, were nominated by their classes. Ballot boxes were placed in Armstrong Bank and Harp's Grocery Store in Gore, and the winner was determined by the child receiving the most votes, Terry Sloan with the Lions Club said. Sloan said the votes were actually cash donations.
Funds raised in the contest are used by the Lions Club for eyeglasses and eye exams for needy families in the area and various community service activities.
Each child participating in the contest received a commemorative trophy. The winner and the three runners-up also rode in Gore's annual Christmas parade.
Sloan said the contest raised $597.43 this year.
She said the Lions Club would like to thank Flowers Say It All for their donation of flowers to each participant, Armstrong Bank for their donation of trophies, and Armstrong Bank and Harp's Grocery Store for allowing the use of their businesses. She said Mrs. Allenbaugh's fourth-grade class in Gore had the winning contestant and will be presented with a pizza party from the Lion's Club.
