The rotunda and exterior walls are all that remain of the old Sallisaw High School, which was destroyed in a June 2004 fire set by an arsonist. But now vandals are trying to destroy what remains of the school after causing about $3,000 worth of damage at the school over the past year.

Shannon Fisher with the Old Sallisaw High School Association said it was discovered last week that someone threw a rock at the glass rotunda door. While the rock did not go through the double-paned door, the glass was shattered.

This is not the first time that vandals have struck the old school. Fisher said in early spring someone threw rocks through rotunda waindows, damaging them. In early summer, the association discovered bricks missing from the sidewalk. One of those bricks was found at the skating park near the police department.

"It's just such a senseless thing for them to do," Fisher said of the vandalism. "It costs to replace it."

The association is now offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects involved in the vandalism. The group has also discussed undetectable surveillance cameras at the school, Fisher said.

"It saddens us to no end," Chris Talbot, association member, commented.

Those with any information about the vandalism are urged to call the police department at (918) 775-4177.

Those who would like to make a donation to the association to help replace the glass may call an association member.
