The 2006 Sequoyah County Senior Retirement Fair, sponsored by the Sequoyah County TIMES and the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce, will offer movies, popcorn and a number of other features Saturday with the show premiers at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria at Sallisaw High School.

Free gifts and refreshments, numerous door prizes, and a trip for two to Eureka Springs, Ark., are just a few of the things which will be at "Special Feature: Living The Good Life," the theme of this year's fair.

DeLanna Nutter, Your TIMES advertising manager, said, "Retirees are not sitting around the house any more. They are out there doing things, having fun, and enjoying the good life. That is why we chose that theme this year."

This year's fair will feature over 45 booths, over 150 prizes, free Mazzio's pizza, free sandwiches from Subway in Sallisaw, free soft drinks from George's in Muldrow, free Aquafina Water provided by Pepsi, free ice cream provided by Braum's of Sallisaw, and free entertainment.

Janice Richards and Country Rain will perform live at the fair. The group includes Joey Miller, Janice Richards, Kenny Robders, Marlon Biazo, Tommy Wilson, Joan Bryan and Eldo Owens.

In addition, most of the vendors at the fair will be giving away goodies, from free fly swatters to free massages. The vendors this year include Health South Rehabilitation Center, Cookson Hills Electric Cooperative Inc., Sequoyah County Farm Bureau, Arvest Bank, Professional Home Health & Hospice, Mazzio's, Hospice of the Cherokees, Sequoyah Memorial Hospital, First National Bank, Go Ye Village Inc., Subway, Blue Ribbon Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Amedysis, Marvin's Food Warehouse, Bodiford Eye Center, National Bank of Sallisaw, Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Peachtree Hospice, Health Care Innovations, Aerocare, Sparks 55 Plus, River Valley Medical Supply Inc., Center for Hearing Ltd., Methodist Village & Nursing Home of Fort Smith, Braum's, Health Depot, Trinity Hospice, Choctaw Racino, Emberton & Co., HealthCare Innovations Private Duty, Peters Agency, Mercy Lifeline, Valley Land & Title, Agape Healthcare Services, Housecalls Home Health Services Inc., Open Aire MRI, Rogers Law Offices, Sequoyah Manor, Southwest Home Health, and Seubold Family Chiropractic.

In addition, Your TIMES is rolling out the red carpet for the Sequoyah County Boys & Girls Club, and will offer those attending the fair photos taken with some of Hollywood's favorite stars. All the proceeds from the $3 photos will go to the Boys & Girls Club, which offers services to nearly 6,000 children in Sequoyah County, but which must also survive on local donations. The photo processing for the photos is being donated by Bedford's Camera and Video of Fort Smith. Helene of Arkansas Costume and Bridal of Fort Smith is donating costumes for Your TIMES' stars, and the Sallisaw Antique Mall and Hastings of Fort Smith are lending the stars themselves to the fundraising effort.

"This year's fair is for those over 50 and who are looking for fun!" Nutter said. "Please come out Saturday and join us. It's free! And we are going to have a great time."

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
