According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), the accident occurred at about 5:27 a.m. two miles east of Vian on Interstate 40.
Martin Thomas Marruffo, 40, of Bloy, Ariz., was driving a 1988 Ford van when he fell asleep and his van drifted onto the shoulder of the highway, striking the backend of a 2004 Chevrolet Venture, driven by Micaelino Matias Lopez, 20, of Wister, that was parked on the shoulder of the road, the OHP reported.
A passenger in Lopez's vehicle, Omar Garcia-Belasquez, 20, also of Wister, was taken by helicopter to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., where he was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m. because of the injuries he received in the accident, according to the OHP. Lopez was not injured.
Other passengers in Lopez's vehicle, all of Wister, were treated and released for injuries. Angel Garcia-Belasquez, 30, Noel Garcia-Perez, 20, and Jorge Ruiz Zurita, 20, were taken to Muskogee Regional Medical Center.
The OHP reported that the driver of the parked vehicle, Marruffo, was taken to Muskogee Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Four passengers in Marruffo's vehicle, all of Bloy, Ariz., were also taken to area hospitals, where they were treated and released. Fernando Castro and Rolando Martinez, 19, were taken to Muskogee Regional Medical Center, while Anastacio Motaro, 37, and Adel Velasquez, 51, were taken to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw.
The OHP reported that seatbelts were equipped in both vehicles, but no one was wearing them.
The accident was investigated by OHP Trooper Adam Wood. He was assisted by OHP Troopers Joshua Davies, Jason Holt, and Ward Oliphant.
