Sallisaw firefighters responded to a grass fire east of Shadow Creek Golf Course in Sallisaw at 2:06 p.m. Monday.

Due to high wind and extremely dry conditions the fire burned about 40 acres between Delaware Avenue and U.S. Highway 64, Sallisaw Fire Chief Mike Tubbs said.

Even with the recent rain and muddy conditions the grass is still very dry, Tubbs said.

The fire threatened 14 homes, two businesses and eight storage sheds. Oklahoma Forestry provided a firebreak, which kept the fire from spreading further west, Tubbs said.

No one was evacuated but residents were warned to get ready to leave if it became necessary, Tubbs said.

Firefighters had the fire extinguished in about two hours, Tubbs said.

Tubbs said he did not believe the fire was set intentionally. Brent, Gans, Brushy, and Central fire departments assisted with the fire.

Tubbs said no new burn permits would be issued in the Sallisaw city limits due to the extremely dry conditions.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
