A Moffett man is facing various charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop and then fleeing the scene.

Wesley M. McAfee, 41, of Moffett was charged Aug. 17 with felony assault and battery on a police officer and misdemeanor counts of escape from arrest or detention, defective vehicle, and failure to signal.

According to court records, a Moffett police officer was on patrol at about 11:13 p.m. July 14 on U.S. Highway 64 when he observed a vehicle with only one headlight, driven by McAfee, make a lane change without using a signal.

When the officer proceeded to pull McAfee over, McAfee allegedly sped up and pulled into the parking lot of a gas station. McAfee then got out of the vehicle and ran into the station, where the officer requested McAfee's driver's license and insurance verification. McAfee allegedly ignored the officer and then was combative.

McAfee allegedly began reaching for something that was in the front waistband of his shorts, the officer reported. When the officer reached to grab McAfee's arm, McAfee elbowed the officer in the side.

McAfee than ran from the store. The officer pursued McAfee, who was not apprehended.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
