The Sallisaw School Board on Monday night called for a May 13 special election to fill a vacant seat on the board.

Superintendent Ron Wyrick said Tuesday that the filing period for Ward 4 will be held April 7, 8 and 9. The person elected to the seat will be on the board for one year, finishing the remainder of Patsy Thomason's term. Thomason resigned in January after discovering she did not live in the ward she represented.

The board also voted to purchase a home located a 1004 E. Creek in Sallisaw at a cost of $25,000. Wyrick said the home is located behind Liberty Elementary School's gymnasium. He said the school's goal is to own the entire block where the elementary school is located. Wyrick said they have no plans for the home yet, but may clean it up and use if for storage for the time being.

The board also approved the school's technology plan for the 2008-9 school year and hired Iliana Sprinkle as a Title VII truancy liaison.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
