Sequoyah County Commissioners will discuss an interlocal law enforcement agreement with the City of Sallisaw at their meeting Monday.

The interlocal agreement, if approved by commissioners, will allow the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department to cooperate with the Sallisaw Police Department during investigations both inside and outside Sallisaw city limits. The Sallisaw city commissioners approved the agreement at their meeting last month and forwarded the agreement to the county.

In the past, the county commissioners said they had concerns about who was responsible for law enforcement officers' insurance, and who would be responsible for that insurance inside and outside city limits.

New District 2 County Commissioners Larry Carter of Vian will be sworn into office at the meeting. Carter defeated incumbent Lewis Warren in a runoff election in August. Warren was honored at the commissioners' Dec. 27 meeting with a plaque for his service to the county and District 2.

The commissioners will also discuss a lease-purchase agreement for motor graders for Districts 1 and 2, and will hear a proposed memorandum agreement with the Cherokee Nation.

Dorothy Cox and Bessie Johnson are on the agenda to make citizens presentations to the commissioners.

Other business includes electing a chairman and vice chairman for the commission board. The three commissioners rotate chairman and vice chairman posts at the beginning of every new year.

The commissioners will also be announcing the 2005 holiday schedule, reviewing highway expenditures and declaring a 9-1-1 communications antenna as surplus property since it is being replaced.

Also on the agenda are the approval of monthly reports from county officials, and the approval of blanket purchase orders. The commissioners were reluctant to approve purchase orders throughout December because of the lack of funds.

The commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in their meeting room in the Sequoyah County Courthouse annex. The commission's first meeting of the month is always held at 9 a.m. rather than 10 a.m., which is the meeting time set for the rest of the month.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
