The sixth Sequoyah County Basketball Tournament will tip off on Monday with Roland trying to keep its grip on the traveling trophy that goes to the winner of the annual event.

Armstrong Bank is again the sponsor of the tournament, which matches up the seven county schools plus Webbers Falls in a week-long event to determine hoops superiority.

The Roland boys have won the past two county championships and will be vying for a three-peat when they open play on Monday against Webbers Falls. Roland is also the defending champion of the girls division after the Lady Rangers ended Muldrow's three-year reign last season.

Top seeds have been assigned to the Roland boys and the Muldrow girls. The tournament will be hosted by Sallisaw with Vian serving as a sub-site on Monday and Wednesday. Action will tip off on Monday with four games at both sites. First-round match-ups in the boys bracket include Roland vs. Webbers Falls, Vian vs. Central, Muldrow vs. Gore and Sallisaw vs. Gans. Opening round clashes for the girls include Muldrow vs. Gans, Gore vs. Vian, Central vs. Sallisaw and Webbers Falls vs. Roland.

No games are scheduled for Tuesday, avoiding a conflict with the Orange Bowl football game between Oklahoma and USC. The tourney will resume with consolation-round games on Wednesday. Semifinals are set for Thursday with consolation championships on Friday. The event concludes on Saturday with third-place games in the afternoon and championship games at night.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
