U.S. Rep. Brad Carson (D-Claremore) announced his plans Tuesday to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Don Nickles.

Carson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives Nov. 7, 2000. As a result of redistricting after the 2000 census, Carson's district was expanded to include much of eastern Oklahoma from Kansas to Texas.

Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys said Monday that he also intends to run for the U.S. Senate seat as a republican, but has not officially declared his candidacy.

"After much prayer and thought, I will file today documents announcing my candidacy for what I believe will be the most important election in Oklahoma in a generation, the United States Senate seat being vacated by Don Nickles," Carson said in a Tuesday press release.

Carson said he intends a more formal announcement of his campaign in the next few weeks. He said the focus of his campaign will be on bringing jobs to Oklahoma, health care reform, tax reform, and immigration reform.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
