Robert Paul Hair Jr., 35, of Tennessee, could face charges in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw of possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude an officer, assault and battery on a police officer with a deadly weapon, and driving with a suspended driver's license for leading police on the pursuit, which reached speeds of more than 90 miles per hour.
As of Friday morning, no charges had been filed against Hair and no arrest warrant had been sought, according to court records.
According to a police report, the pursuit began after Vian officers were requested to assist the Sallisaw Police Department in stopping a vehicle, which left a Sallisaw business without paying for gas.
Vian Officer Michael Thomas reported that he encountered the vehicle on Interstate 40 headed westbound and began trying to stop the driver, Hair. During the pursuit, Hair allegedly swerved his vehicle in an attempt to run the officer's car off the road, according to the report
Hair eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed it at the bottom of the Carlile Road exit. He then allegedly jumped from the vehicle and ran from the officer.
A 17-year-old juvenile who was also in the car was taken to the Vian Police Department where he allegedly gave a written statement detailing how he and his cousin, Hair, had stolen the vehicle from Tennessee and were heading to California to his mother's home.
